I came across an article on small businesses and the fear of a recession at the US News & World Report website today. In short, apparently small business owners in the US are concerned about a potential economic downturn. Are you worried? I’m not.
My case is certainly different than other small business owners. I don’t run a little brick and mortar shop, or a service-oriented business for local clients. I offer services through a Web-centric business to clients all over the world. Because of that, I’m not really concerned about a recession. The weak dollar has brought me a significant increase in international business over the last few months, and if anything, hiring an independent contractor is more likely during a recession locally (it’s cheaper to lay off a full-time employee and bring in freelancers). In my case, I run my PR firm which is benefiting from the weak dollar, and I’m a freelanceĀ business writer on the side, giving me two attractive options to ride out the economic turns.
How do you anticipate a recession affecting your business? Will it be good for you? Do you worry that you won’t be able to stay in business if it gets bad enough? Share your thoughts on how these pending economic swings will affect small business owners in your industry.
